BISTRO LQ FEATURED ARTIST - Spring 2010
Johnny Taylor

Lives and works in Los Angeles
Johnny Taylor started drawing as soon as he was old enough to hold a pencil. Quickly exhausting the three main subjects all artistic little boys are required to depict - spaceships, monsters and race cars - a true child of the 70's, Taylor soon moved on to the pop culture troika of Mad Magazine, KISS and Star Wars. By age 10 he was producing a weekly comic strip for the local paper and had found his calling.
When Taylor commenced college at the University of Memphis he was already making the transition from cartoonist to painter. He began to paint three small paintings every day for the entire year of 1993. Developing from simple line drawings with paint-by-numbers style color, Taylor's work began to cross the hard to define boundary between illustration and painting. This is when Taylor identified and developed his own style. By immersing himself in the daily practice of painting he began to look at the world around differently - more observant and conscious of visual details.
Influenced by Jasper Johns, Stuart Davis, Andy Warhol and Jean-Michel Basquiat, Taylor also draws from the regional art of his native American South and the fresh style of street graffiti. Taylor's work mirrors the way each style uses text, a cross between the thematic and decorative elements from the artists of the South and the specifically stylized, single gesture marks from the street.
